To get to the Bolivar Penisula from Galveston you have to cross a small stretch of water, and every bridge they build gets destroyed by hurricanes, so the state has several ferries that carry the cars across. We made use of the ferry and had a great time along the way. You could see the freighters and oil tankers out in gulf preparing to enter. 
The ride was smooth and quick, but even on the sunny the strength of the wind was surprising.
