Oklahoma-Prairie dogging

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

The Kids had a great time getting their hands on some of bones and antlers in the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Visitor Center. We watched a great movie on the history of the buffalo and the establishing of the Refuge.

The Prairie dogs seem more abundant and less timid than I have ever observed in my lifetime. The kids were very fasinated and brave until the Prairie dogs started to bark and then it was time to run!

They showed the kids who is boss.

They are definitely less scary when they are stuffed, everyone is happy now.

These little prairie dogs not only coexist with the buffalo, but are extremely necessary for the prairie ecosystem. The extensive network of tunnels that they dig provide aeration for the matted root systems of the prairie grasses.
